64 - The Syllables ZI and ZO: Origins of Writing in Western Civilization and the Kaulins Minoan Aegean Sign Concordance (MinAegCon™): A Syllabic Grid of Mycenaean Greek Linear B Script, the Cypriot Syllabary, the Phaistos Disk, two Old Elamite Scripts, the Inscription on the Axe of Arkalochori, and Comparable Signs from Sumerian Pictographs and Egyptian Hieroglyphs

This is the 64th posting in this series (which started here), and presents the Syllables ZI and ZO in the Syllabic Grid. Each syllable is presented in its own posting.

There is first a scan of a "syllabic" table excerpt from the original Microsoft Word manuscript -- the links there are not clickable because it is one image.

That image is followed by the original text -- the links there are clickable -- but you can not see the Aegean Fonts or images embedded in Microsoft Word, as these do not resolve in Blogger, so you will see some "filler" material. After I get all the syllables online, I will clean up the individual pages by making images of the various signs and uploading them to eliminate the current text resolution deficiencies, but it is a massive amount of tedious extra graphics work, so I am not doing it right now, as it is not essential for online purposes. One can see the full grid for the syllable on the scanned image.

The Syllables ZI and ZO in the Minoan Aegean Sign Concordance (by Andis Kaulins)

ZI [the existence of ZO is questioned] χέω “ flow, go, run” χεῦμα “flow, stream, casting (metal), molten” θέω "run (Is θέω derived from χέω in Mycenaen Greek?) Wikipedia on THETA: In Ancient Greek, θ was an aspirated voiceless dental plosive /t̪ʰ/. In Modern Greek it is the voiceless dental fricative /θ/ (as 'th' in “thing”). Sumerian had no “O”,so ZI or ZU roots must be sought. Indeed, I doubt the existence of a ZO syllable in Mycenaean Greek. Classical Greek has few  words starting with either ZI or ZO and Palaeolexicon has no words beginning with Zi or ZO for Linear B in current transliteration.

Cypriot syllabary 𐠿 ZO χέω “ flow, go, run χεῦμα “flow, stream” If Zo is ZI/XEW, Sidon, Arabic Saïda, then looks like a possibility for the puzzling anthroponym zo-ta-i-le-wo-se while obscure e-pi-zo-ta is e.g. a-po-zi-ta ἀπόξυσις “sharp points” for weapons

Linear B 𐀿 (20) ZO χέω The sign is unclear and speculative as “a torch” “a conical potters wheel” operated by running water or a “molten cast” of metal χυτρεύς “potter” χεῦμα “flow, stream, casting (metal)”

Overnight I found that no less a source than Strabo used the Z- viz. X- sound term χωρμετρέω for "to measure a country", as χώρα means "land, country, place, spot" and χωρμέτρης "land surveyor", so that our assumption here of a Z-sound for ZE and the concept of earth measure was correct.

The Syllable ZE update 1 in the Minoan Aegean Sign Concordance (by Andis Kaulins)

ZE Signs  here are either measuring sticks or the seed heads of wheat which look similar to a marked measuring stick. ζειά “Einkorn” triticum monococcum There is overlap with geo- and the syllable GE, indicating several terms for “Earth” in use. Normally expected might be γεωμετρέω (geometry – “earth measure“) but one sees that there was also a Z- syllable term such as in ζείδωρος "epithet of the earth", viz. Sumerian zikura “Earth”. Strabo for “measure a country” has χωρμετρέω. Compare γεόομαι “to become Earth” with Latvian zeme, Lithuanian žeme, Old Prussian semme “Earth”

Cypriot syllabary No Cypriot sign known. _______ Egyptian The Djed Pillar is associated with Memphis, the Summer Solstice and immortality and ostensibly measures the 3 or 4 seasons (it varies) as symbols of life. (for more observations see columns right)
